Now that ABS-CBN's Lobo is nearing its end, what's next for Angel Locsin? This might be the question of Angel Locsin's fans out there, including us.

We simply hope that it's a lot sexier than Darna, a lot daring than Ligaw na Bulaklak and a lot revealing than Dyesebel. Whew, is there really a teleserye like that, haha. If there is, no doubt that it will be a really big hit, or will be banned by the Movie and TV Regulation Board.

Angel takes off with high-flying fashion

MANILA, Philippines—Both have had humble beginnings. Angel Locsin started in the industry as a bit player and a virtual unknown. Today she is a star.

It was a testament to the versatility of the clothes that were anything but mainstream. Bright-colored dresses, skirts, colored and black tights, vests in bold printed fabrics invaded the girls’ runway. There was a lot of layering, giving the collection a touch of spontaneity. For that rock-star appeal, a black frilly top was paired with a glimmering pair of silver jeans, showing off Angel’s naturally sexy stride.

For the guys taking the catwalk, on the other hand, they showed off colored sunglasses, skinny ties, printed scarves, varicolored belts, hats and striking jackets.

SOME QUESTIONS ABOUT THE KINDLE

Recently, my publisher and agent have been looking into licensing the rights to publish my books for Amazon's Kindle. Several writer friends now have Kindles and have carried on enthusiastically about them. I'm not so sure.

One writer friend is currently reading a new book on a Kindle. The book was bought for less than the price of the hardback, or a trade paperback and there is every chance that the author received a much lower royalty on that sale than he would have on a traditional book sale. (And, if his contract is anything like mine, he probably only got half of the royalty (minus his agent's 15% of course), while the book's traditional publisher got the other half.) Good for my friend who saved money on the book and loves the Kindle. Good for Amazon who made most of the money. Good for the publisher who got half the royalty at virtually no cost to itself. Not so good for the author.

I've got some questions:

• What are the royalties on Kindle sales? How often are statements issued? How often are they paid?

• Is there any sort of advance payment?

• Is Amazon’s right to publish for the Kindle, exclusive? Is there a limit, time or otherwise, to that exclusivity? Kindle is a proprietary technology, so if they get exclusive rights to a book, it is very much as if we licensed the right to sell a book only to Barnes & Noble and not to Borders or any other bookstores. That seems like a bad idea. At the moment there isn’t much competition for Kindle – although Sony makes an e-book reader – but in the future there will be.

• If we, or our agent, upload the book ourselves (in essence, make the sale ourselves), how is that affected by the existing contract with our traditional publisher – the one that says they get 50% of e-book sale proceeds - but, presumably only if they make that sale, because the contract only gives them “non-exclusive” rights to license subsidiary rights.

• On the other hand, if we (my agent and I) are uploading the version of my books that my traditional publisher worked on – editing, formatting, cover art, etc. – then they probably are entitled to some percentage, even if they didn’t make the “sale.” But, probably it should be less than 50% since they aren’t having to produce and distribute an actual book, and we’re doing the work to upload the book, or the manuscript or whatever. If that is the case, what percent are they entitled to?

A lot of these issues are similar to those that led the screenwriters to go on strike last year. But, we book authors don't have the same sort of clout - very few of us have networks, advertisers and viewers dependent on our output.

At the moment, sales of e-books for the Kindle - and for Sony's reader - are pretty small. But they're growing. And as the technology improves, as more reading machines come on the market, as more books are available at lower prices, that market is going to grow - fast. And unless writers' contracts reflect these technological and market changes, writers are going to be on the losing end.

My standing instructions to the lawyer who reviews my contracts are: "As a writer, I realize that I'm going to get screwed. Just make sure that they use enough lube." The Kindle is going to require an additional application of grease to my contracts before I’m happy with it.

Diana Zubiri delves into drama

Diana Zubiri has come a long way since she incited the ire of a Metro Manila mayor by posing half-naked in a public bridge. From a sexy starlet, she is now a true actress—about to conquer the afternoon drama slot by storm.

When iGMA caught up with Diana Zubiri on the set of her show, Babangon Ako at Dudurugin Kita, she was excitedly waiting for her favorite meal—spicy fried chicken from a fast food place. Watching her eat with such relish is enough to make anyone hungry too. While eating, she looks like a kid—complete with oily fingers and a satisfied smile. She paid no mind to her make-up or her dress. How can anyone not love her?

After eating, she quickly cleaned up and donned her professional actor hat, ready to cry, laugh or receive a slap at a moments notice.

Diana has been getting more and more projects as a drama actress these days. And she has not disappointed anyone yet! Does this mean that she is turning her back on sultry roles?

In Babangon, she is the unassuming Julie who, later on, plays a more active role in the fight against the bad guys. Just as she loves the strong sexy characters she has portrayed, she enjoys playing her current role. But it is her next project, Gaano Kadalas ang Minsan that is really giving her a challenge.

“Napanood ko na po. Medyo, na-ppressure ako kasi ang galing ni Ms. Hilda doon eh, siya ‘yung nag-linya ng gaano kadalas ang minsan," she replies when asked if she has seen the film.

“Sana nga ‘di ko na pinanood para kung ano pagawa sa akin ni direk, on the spot, gagawin ko. Siyempre ‘di pa tayo ganun kagaling, naghahasa pa tayo."

She considers this her most tasking project to date. Not just because she will play a character once flawlessly brought to life by the immortal Hilda Koronel, but because Diana knows that playing the wife who willingly gave her husband to another woman requires more than the usual drama.

“Try ko talagang galingan, gusto kong galingan pero ‘di ko mahihigitan iyun," she humbly states but adds, “pero sa generation ko, maganda naman kung masabi ko na maganda ang pagkaka-gawa ko [sa character]."

She continues, “napaka-ganda ng storya. ‘Yun nga po iniiwasan ko--ayaw ko na isipin ng tao na ‘di ko kayang gawin."

Diana promises her loyal fans that she will try her best to give the classic role the dignity it deserves. She is determined to show that she deserves to be called a drama actor.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY EMMA & THE U.S.

Yesterday, June 27, Emma Goldman was 139 years old. So long as there is anyone left alive who loves freedom and who loves the U.S. for the real reasons that it is great, she lives on. It is fitting that the celebration of her birth should come close to July Fourth, Independence Day.

Here's what she had to say about the U.S. while she was on trial for speaking out against the draft during the First World War - another "war for democracy." (I think I may have blogged about this before, but it bears repeating, especially during an election year.)

"Who is the real patriot, or rather what is the kind of patriotism that we represent? The kind of patriotism we represent is the kind of patriotism which loves America with open eyes. Our relation towards America is the same as the relation of a man who loves a woman, who is enchanted by her beauty and yet who cannot be blind to her defects. And so I wish to state here, in my own behalf and in behalf of hundreds of thousands whom you decry and state to be antipatriotic, that we love America, we love her beauty, we love her riches, we love her mountains and her forests, and above all we love the people who have produced her wealth and riches, who have created all her beauty, we love the dreamers and the philosophers and the thinkers who are giving America liberty. But that must not make us blind to the social faults of America. That cannot compel us to be inarticulate to the terrible wrongs committed in the name of the country.
"We simply insist, regardless of all protests to the contrary, that this war is not a war for democracy. If it were a war for the purpose of making democracy safe for the world, we would say that democracy must first be safe for America before it can be safe for the world."

Emma Goldman came here from Lithuania, then part of the Russian Empire. My family showed up about twenty-five years later from Poland, the Ukraine and Romania. And like pretty much everyone else who shows up here, they all came looking for something better; for freedom, opportunity, elbow-room, to live in a society where they could be largely left alone to be themselves. And for the most part, with some terrible exceptions, they found all that.

And they also found each other. Last weekend, here in Los Angeles, I went to a free music festival in Pasadena. There were bands from Mexico, Cambodia, Africa, South America, even places as exotic and foreign as Europe and New York. Earlier in the day I'd had an Armenian lunch. That night my friends and I had a Chinese dinner. And that is not an atypical weekend for many people in America's big cities.

At its greatest, the U.S. isn't a melting pot, it's a stew in which you can taste and savor all of the individual ingredients while also getting the strong flavor of the whole.

And I'm pretty sure that's one of the things that Emma Goldman loved about this country. And one of the things that she understood it takes open eyes and vigilance and tolerance and agitation and speaking up to protect.

On Independence Day we can best celebrate the U.S. both by our willingness to fight for the many things that are right about this country, and against those that are wrong.

Marian Rivera - FHM Sexiest Filipina 2008 ???

The tally of FHM's 100 Sexiest this year have the fans of Marian Rivera and Angel Locsin closely anticipating the final result. In the end, Marian (center) won the battle while Angel (left) ranked third, behind Katrina Halili (right).

Marian Rivera's fans have a reason to celebrate. The Dyesebel star is the first non-cover girl to be hailed as the Philippines' Finest by FHM, the biggest-selling men's magazine in the country.

The final results, sent to PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) by the FHM group at exactly 6:36 p.m., indicated that Marian won with a total of 316, 135 votes, while Katrina Halili, two-time winner of FHM 100 Sexiest, landed the second spot with 123, 239 votes. Angel Locsin, who won as sexiest Pinay in 2005, came in third with 121, 388 votes.

FHM Philippines editor-in-chief Alan Madrilejos revealed to PEP that Marian Rivera enjoyed a considerably large lead in terms of online and text votes, while Katrina Halili topped the ballot-voting category. Meanwhile, this year's global winner is Megan Fox.

The July issue of FHM will reveal the complete and official list of FHM 100 Sexiest.

MARIAN VERSUS ANGEL. One interesting twist to this year's poll is the rivalry between Marian and Angel.

Fans of the two beautiful ladies united to give 100 percent support to their respective idols. Angel's fans abroad claimed that they spent money on text just so they can send their votes. Marian's fans, on the other hand, spent so many hours in front of the Internet to make sure that their Kapuso bet would reign supreme in the online-voting category.

Fans of the two women have been rooting and ranting in PEP's FHM-related articles in the closing weeks of the tally, while waiting for the FHM Sexiest vote results. Their aggressiveness showed through the comments and the consistent arguments between the two escalated, even to the point of questioning FHM's voting system.

Even PEP's own conducted poll, "Sino sa tingin mo ang tatanghaling sexiest Pinay ng ‘FHM'?" drew fire from the fans as they carefully monitored and analyzed the results nearly every day. For them, percentage matters and .01 percent lead is a great deal especially if it means victory for their idol.

Now that the results are finally revealed, will this clash between the Marian and Angel fans also come to an end?

This is only one issue, of course, and many more will arise for the fans to rally again in support their most loved idols.

That is the story of the day. Allegedly, the GMA talents came victorious because of an enthusiastic campaign from the GMA management itself. Employees and talents alike were given 300 pesos load to vote for Marian Rivera, as reported in by several movie columnists.

Kareena Kapoor - Most Influential Woman in Bollywood ???

If Forbes can do it, then, why not Verve? We are indeed talking about the lifestyle magazine Verve's latest issue that has profiled the top female achievers of this year.

The best part of this list is that there are no rankings or ratings for the achievers. They are simply profiled. And true to the saying that there is no bigger business than showbiz, it is indeed Kareena Kapoor, the reigning queen of Bollywood, who features on the magazine cover. Showing no signs of slowing down when it comes to posing for covers, one surely must've lost the count of the number of magazines that she has posed for this year.

Saif Ali Khan romances Kareena Kapoor

Saif Ali Khan will romance real life ladylove Kareena Kapoor in a new Karan Johar production.

The couple has been signed on by Rensil D’ Silva of Rang De Basanthi fame who will direct this movie. Saif and Bebo will pair for the first time in a Karan Johar movie.

But this movie is not the bubbly romance with foreign locales that Johar has perfected. It will be a dark gritty drama with Saif as a terrorist. Kareena will play his ladylove.

This movie is going to be an interesting watch as Karan Johar makes a U-turn from his usual lavish set, dances filled romantic comedies.

Saif Ali Khan, who is known to play rather typical characters like Sameer in Dil Chahta Hai, Karan Singh Rathod in Ek Haseena Thi, Cyrus Mistry in Being Cyrus and Langda Tyagi in Omkara, is again ready to play a hatke role.He will play a terrorist in Karan Johar’s next production. The untitled film will be directed by Rang De Basanti writer, Rensil D’Silva.

Says a source close to the film, “The story is a far cry from the usual Karan’s films. There will be no designer glam sham or naach gaana. It is a hard-hitting subject. Karan loved Rensil’s script so much that he decided to produce it. He also gave Rensil the freedom to choose the actors to justify his script. That’s how Rensil decided to cast Saif. He plays a meticulous and urban-educated terrorist. There is also an interesting romantic track between him and the leading lady, Kareena,” adds the source.

Glasgow 1982. Sunny Govan is home of two waring communities of rival football supporters.

She begins to sell her meat all over the south side and even takes another lover, this time a handsome fella fae Easterhouse. Everything seems rosy until one day she goes mad whilst dressed as a bear kills her neighbour, Mrs. Singh.

Her local community pissed off with her antics (and the fact that she's still signing on whilst working) report her to the procurator fiscal and she's sentenced to 40 years in prison.

Dying soon after her release the local kids celebrate by pissing on her grave.

Cheska Garcia excited on her wedding ???

Unfortunately for the people of Argentina Varela leads a double life, by day his a kinda South American David Cameron but by night he is, in fact the evil ring leader of the Nazi gang responsible for the violence (Hang on, that's just David Cameron anyway).

The violence goes from bad to worse, what with a defenseless Rabbi beaten to death by a group of junior Slip Knot wannabes and a leather clad perv who gets his kicks by urinating on babies it looks like the city is doomed.

What will it take for someone to take a stand against these rotters?

Making up for his stinky fish breath lack of super powers and the fact that he rides a really crap moped by being generally hard as nails, The Sadomaster soon has the evil Nazi's on the run.

But things are probably going to get a lot worse (acting and plotwise) before they get better...

I say probably because by this point I gave up and went to bed. I mean there comes a point when you have to ask yourself is it really worth sitting up late at night feverishly scribbling notes on a film only myself (and possibly Julian Brazier will ever see) as a fat, sweaty Argentinian non-actor grinning like a loon in an attempt to appear to have learning difficulties has a huge rubber cock forced into his mouth in the background?

The final decision was made for me tho' when I caught sight of the pristine and vac sealed uncut copy of the Joe D'Amato classic Porno Holocaust hiding under a pile of Peppa Pig DVD's on my desk.

I mean who wants to watch such mindless and inept shaky cam rubbish as Sadomaster when you know that only a few feet away Mark Shanon's warty scrotum is awaiting your attention in all it's remastered wide screen glory?

Costing less than a McDonalds happy meal (and managing to be far less appetizing) this lo-fi revenge flik from the aptly titled Gorevision Films is the kind of movie that the self proclaimed art crowd will muse over for years to come whilst your connoisseur of cult movies (and no doubt all you fine readers here) will (hopefully) see it for the tragically un-hip Mad Foxes rip-off that it really is.

Unfortunately Sadomaster was a big enough hit in Argentina to allow Magariños and Giangiacomo to continue making 'films', with their next opus Un Cazador de Zombis currently shooting back to back with an English language version of the same movie.

And I for one can't wait.

Can I just point out that to my many American readers the last bit was what we term irony, or put it this way; for can't wait I mean I hope their studio (and faces) burn down.

Diana Zubiri disappointed ???

MANILA, Philippines - Diana Zubiri said she was disappointed when GMA 7 pulled out her best friend, Sunshine Dizon, from the cast of the TV adaptation of Danny Zialcita’s “Gaano Kadalas ang Minsan.”

“We were so happy to hear we’d be working together. It’s been a long time since ‘Encantadia,’” Diana told some writers on Friday at the Mandarin Suites in Quezon City. “But Sunshine was already in the hospital then.”

Lilybeth Rasonable, GMA 7 assistant VP for Drama, said Sunshine suffered from migraine. The network decided to replace her because “she couldn’t work anymore” under medication, which she needed constantly. “We asked her to get well first,” Rasonable told Inquirer.

Sunshine was replaced by Camille Prats—making a comeback after delivering her first child—in the role of Lily, the character portrayed by Vilma Santos in the screen version.

Diana said she had not spoken with Sunshine since work on the show started. “The subject is kind of sensitive,” the actress said, refusing to elaborate.

Diana plays Elsa, the embattled character portrayed by Hilda Koronel. To prepare for the role, Diana watched the 1982 movie, produced by Viva Films. She said, “Miss Hilda was good. I really felt her character’s pain. I don’t think I can survive what Elsa went through.”

Diana is teamed up with Marvin Agustin as Louie, earlier played by the late Dindo Fernando. “We have several love scenes,” she said. “In the beginning, it felt awkward. We had to shoot one bed scene four times because he couldn’t stop giggling.”

It's a feat that Angel Locsin has managed to stay on top in a business where the turnover rate is high.

Angel knows how it feels to be number one. Well, many times over. She was FHM Philippines' sexiest woman. For this year, Maxim Philippines picked her as the sexiest woman in the country.

"We really can’t control the result. We can’t dictate the winner or who the people will vote for...kailangan ko bang kunin ang lahat? Happy ako at pinagtitiwalaan ako at naniniwala sa akin ang mga tao...those who have voted for me, maraming salamat sa mga boto ninyo...isipin na rin natin na nag-iiba na ang times. Angel remains as one of the sough-after image model of products. Just recently, she was chosen as the new face of Folded and Hung.

F&H’s president Ronald Pineda believes that Angel is the number one celebrity endorser.

The FHM search for the country’s sexiest woman has never been this hot. The voting ended last Sunday but the winner will be announced in June. It’s said that Marian Rivera is the top favorite in the online voting, with Katrina Halili and Angel Locsin following her.

Actually, this has become a personal duel between Marian’s and Angel’s fans. Katrina’s fans, strangely, remain very quiet.

SEXY actress Katrina Halili dismissed issues she is having an affair with Dr. Hayden Kho who is the boyfriend of prominent cosmetic surgeon Dr. Vicki Belo.

Both Vicky and Katrina scoffed at rumors in a separate interview last Saturday.

"I don't know where the issues are coming from. What's important is Dr. Belo and I are okay, I highly respect them. I hope they would not make issues about us," Katrina said.

For Belo's part, she said, "You know, Katrina is our baby. She is our patient for years. And she is a nice lady, super sweet, and kind. I will not be insecure with her as she became loyal to me. When I don't see him, I am a little bit scared. But we made an agreement that if I have a little insecurity or suspicion, we'll talk about it," she said.

When asked if he is ready for all the intrigues showbiz would implicate him, Hayden said: "I guess it's my baptism of fire."

"This is really part of show business, all the intrigues. I mean, I am new in showbiz. So, I don't really understand if controversies really exist. It's really like the lifeblood of showbiz," he said.

Meanwhile, Katrina is overwhelmed with the high ratings that her afternoon television series "Magdusa Ka" is earning.
